Hiring a Car in Europe

How old do you have to be to hire a car in Europe?

The minimum age to hire a car in Europe ranges between 18-25 depending on your pick-up country and selected car class. Additional young renter fees may apply. To get the price for your car hire, please start a reservation in the booking widget above.

What are the driver licence requirements for car hire in Europe?

All drivers must product a valid driving licence and passport at the pick-up date of hire. An International Driver Permit is required if the driver license is not in English.

Can you hire a car and drive across Europe?

Domestic one-way car hire is usually free of charge when Enterprise renters hire and drop off a vehicle at different locations within the same European country. International one-way car hire policies may vary between European countries and may be subject to additional fees. Cross-border Travel Within Europe

If you get written permission from the rental branch and pay a fee, you will usually be allowed to drive and use your rental vehicle in the following countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

A cross-border fee of 55.00 EUR will apply for all cross-border travel and is payable at the hire counter. Vehicles must be returned to the pick up country.

If you are hiring a vehicle in the UK with a view to driving in the Republic of Ireland or going to mainland Europe, you must purchase European Travel Coverage. European Travel Coverage provides customers with our written consent (VE103B form) to drive the vehicle in the countries stated above and to access 24/7 international breakdown cover through the AA.

In all cases, you must inform the hire branch of your intention to leave the country with the vehicle and request authorisation. Any movement of the vehicle outside of pre-authorised countries will be in breach of the rental agreement.

Fuel Charges

Most of our branches offer three options for how you pay for fuel:

Like for like: whatever is in the tank when you pick up your car, is what you will need to return it with. It will never be less than a quarter of a tank, so you don’t have to go fill up immediately.

Pay for what you use: if it is more time-efficient for you, you can return the car to us without filling up and pay for it to be refuelled to the pick-up level. You will pay slightly more per litre as well as an extra fee (up to £15) to cover the downtime caused by us having to get the car refuelled.

Pre-pay: to make things as convenient as possible for customers arriving at our airport branches, you have the option to pre-pay for a tank of fuel (you will be charged at local pump rate*). This means you don’t have to worry about filling up before you drop your hire car back to the airport, you can return it empty. You won't be refunded for any fuel left in the tank, so be sure this is the right option for you. Prepay is sometimes offered at non-airport branches, so ask at the branch if you are interested.
